Insulation Removal Service

Most insulation problems in Lowcountry homes go undetected until they’ve caused significant damage. By the time a homeowner notices musty odors, increased energy bills, or cold floors, the insulation in the crawl space or attic has often been wet, compressed, or pest-compromised for years. Island Spray Foam performs professional insulation removal using industrial HEPA-vacuum equipment and containment protocols that keep contaminants out of your living space during the removal process. Call (843) 295-8394 to schedule a removal assessment.

When Insulation Removal Is Necessary

Water Damage and Mold Contamination

Wet fiberglass batts or wet blown-in cellulose do not dry out — they stay wet, support mold growth, and lose all thermal value. If your attic or crawl space insulation has been exposed to a roof leak, flooding, or sustained high humidity, it must be removed before the source of moisture is addressed and new insulation installed. Installing new insulation over wet material traps the problem.

Pest Infestation

Rodent and wildlife infestations in attic insulation are among the most common removal calls we receive in Lowcountry SC. Fiberglass batts in an attic are ideal nesting material for squirrels, raccoons, and rats — and the damage extends beyond physical compression of the material. Urine, feces, and nesting debris in insulation create health hazards and persistent odor problems that cannot be resolved without complete removal and sanitization.

Asbestos-Containing Insulation

Homes built before 1980 in the SC Lowcountry may contain insulation with asbestos, particularly vermiculite loose-fill in attics and pipe wrap insulation in crawl spaces. Asbestos-containing material requires licensed abatement — not standard removal. We do not perform asbestos abatement, but we assess for suspected ACM during our evaluation and refer to licensed abatement contractors before proceeding with removal.

Old Fiberglass Batts in Crawl Spaces

The most common removal scenario we handle: fiberglass batts originally installed between floor joists in a coastal SC crawl space. These batts absorb moisture from the crawl space atmosphere within a few years, become too heavy for the friction-fit installation to hold, and fall to the crawl space floor. Fallen batts trap moisture against the subfloor, dramatically accelerating wood decay. Complete removal is required before any new insulation system is installed.

Our Insulation Removal Process

Containment and Protection

Before any material is disturbed, we seal HVAC returns and living space access points to prevent contaminated particles from migrating into the home. Heavy-gauge plastic sheeting and negative pressure protocols are used when mold is present. Our crew wears full PPE including respirators throughout the removal.

Extraction

We use industrial-grade electric vacuums with HEPA filtration to extract blown-in and loose-fill materials. Batt insulation is bagged in place and removed in sealed heavy-gauge poly bags. For crawl spaces, we transport materials out via the crawl space access point in sealed bags rather than tracking through the living space.

Disposal

All removed insulation is disposed of at licensed solid waste facilities. Mold-contaminated material is double-bagged and disposed of per SC DHEC guidelines. We provide a disposal receipt for your records. If asbestos-containing material is identified during removal, work stops immediately and we refer to a licensed abatement contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions About Insulation Removal in the SC Lowcountry

How long does insulation removal take?
A standard attic removal in a 2,000 sq ft home typically takes 4-6 hours with a two-person crew. Crawl space removal depends heavily on access — a full-height crawl space with good access can be cleared in 4-8 hours, while a shallow crawl space with limited entry points may require two visits. We estimate removal time during the initial assessment and schedule accordingly.
Does Island Spray Foam replace insulation after removal? Yes — removal and reinstallation are typically scheduled in the same project. The assessment identifies both the removal scope and the appropriate new installation system. In most Lowcountry crawl space projects, the removal is followed immediately by our crawl space encapsulation system. In attic projects, removal is followed by spray foam at the roof deck or attic floor depending on the assembly. We do not require removal and installation to be separate contracts.

Should I be present during insulation removal? It is not required, and in the case of mold-contaminated or suspected ACM removal, we recommend that homeowners and pets vacate during the work. For standard fiberglass batt removal without contamination, you may remain in unaffected areas of the home while work proceeds in the attic or crawl space. We brief you on the scope before starting and walk through the space with you after completion.

Can insulation removal reveal hidden structural damage? Yes — and this is one of the most valuable aspects of a thorough removal. We regularly find wood rot, pest damage, and failed flashing under insulation that the homeowner was unaware of. We document everything we find with photos during the removal process. If we identify structural issues that require a contractor before insulation can proceed, we flag them immediately so you can address them in the right sequence.
